Sergio & Carla

Miami, FL

“We actually have a castle in Ireland that has our last name on it. I’m not royalty but my uncle is really proud and taught me about our heritage.”

Sergio’s story:

Carla and I have been friends for about five years. We were both raised in Miami. I was born in Puerto Rico. She was born here in Miami. My dad is Irish and my mom is Puerto Rican. My dad was a pilot and he met her in Puerto Rico and they married.

My dad didn’t bring much to the United States but my uncle is probably the more direct Irish connection that I have to my family. My dad kind of lost his connection with his Irish heritage because he lived in Puerto Rico for two decades. We actually have a castle in Ireland that has our last name on it. I’m not royalty but my uncle is really proud and taught me about our heritage. My mom, on the other hand, is a very traditional Puerto Rican, very sternly brought up. She’s way more stern than my dad.

Carla’s story:

My mom and dad met in Venezuela. My mom is a military child. My grandpa is Chinese. They moved here when I was conceived because they wanted me to be an American citizen. They didn’t bring much but they did bring arepas!
